Casings And Coolers

What Is A Memory Foam Mattress?

Memory Foam is made with a polyurethane material. In order to increase its density, other chemicals are added which increases its viscosity level. The combination of the chemicals used determines the visco-elastic nature of the polyurethane foam and depending on such combination, the foam has the characteristic of being firmer in cooler temperature and softer in warmer environments. Higher density Memory Foam reacts with body heat. It reacts so that within a few minutes the product forms around the shape of the body. The property of the polyurethane foam could be demonstrated by pressing one’s hand on the foam and then on removing it. The foam retains a clear impression of the hand.

In 1970s, NASA developed Memory Foam for use in their space program. With the hope that with the ability of uniform distribution of pressure of such foam, the extreme G-force phenomenon would be taken care of. Ironically, the material was never used in any space program. In the 1990s, the product came onto the commercial market in the form of topper pads and then as foam mattresses.

A medical company, Tempur-Pedic, first realized the potential commercial application of the foam. They researched the various versions of the foam and came out with a product that they called “Tempur”. This Tempur was durable and had the property of pressure reduction.

When Memory foam first came out in the market, it was known as T-foam. It released chemical gasses making it unhealthy to be used in a closed environment. Over the years, this odor was reduced but could not be gotten rid of. The initial T-foam promised a great product as a bed topper or wheel chair cushion material. But it was noticed that it had issues with wear over a relatively short time. This early version of the foam was not found to be durable and would often crack and remain compressed after a while.

Memory Foam has shown excellent characteristics in responding to changes in temperature and its ability to reduce pressure by spreading the weight evenly over a larger surface area. Consequently, the foam also found an application in medical treatments of patients by preventing so called “bed sores” that a patient can develop when bed-ridden. In other medical applications, the foam is used in wheelchair seat cushions, pillows or padding for people suffering long- term pain from postural problems. For the heat retaining properties of the foam, it makes pain more bearable for a patient suffering from back injuries.

Memory foam is generally denser, making it heavier than other foams. Because it is heavier, the foam remains more supportive and comfortable. A new Memory Foam mattress has a chemical odor that is unpleasant to some people. Although airing does take most of this odor away, certain people remain sensitive to the smell.

Presently Memory Foam is used in many commercial products such as mattress toppers, mattresses and pillows, positional sleep aids, office furniture, automobile seat padding, footwear, infant cribs, car seats, wheel chair cushions, computer carrying cases, tennis racquet handles and more.

Throwing A Fantasy Football Draft Party

When a bunch of guys get together to talk football usually all you need to keep everyone happy is pizza and beer. But, since it actually involves work, a successful fantasy football draft party has a few more important parts.

Set up a large space with enough seating for everyone in your league. Comfortable seating like recliners or couches is a plus, but kitchen chairs will do in a pinch. If you’re planning to seat your members in a living room or den rather than at a table, provide clipboards to serve as writing surfaces. Be aware that some of your members may arrive with laptop computers so providing work surfaces like portable tables is a good idea. Of course you’ll also need adequate outlets nearby in case anyone needs to plug in.

Collect enough pencils for everyone in your league plus a few extras. Someone always shows up with nothing to write with. Small pads for taking notes can also be helpful. Print out enough draft sheets for each member, being sure to make a few extras.

Music, while an important part of a normal party, should be turned off or kept very low so that members can hear one another’s selections. If your draft day coincides with a pre-season game, keep the sound turned off so that people can watch but not get distracted by the play-by-play.

If you have members who are unable to make the draft in person, you will need to set up either a conference call or an instant messaging session so that they can make their selections. Consider using a landline for your conference call since cell phones may lose the connection at a critical moment. Agree ahead of time what instant messaging software you will use and test your connection before everyone arrives.

Pre-order your food and decide when you’ll have it delivered. Because some leagues are large enough that the draft lasts all day, some hosts like to provide food throughout their party, starting with breakfast and ending with lunch and snacks. Small leagues might consider taking a break halfway through the draft to have lunch. Finger foods like sandwiches or pizza are easy to eat while working. Load up a cooler with beer, soda and ice and bring it into the draft room. That way, members won’t miss out on the action going back and forth to the refrigerator.

Jim’ll fix it badge – If you grew up in the ‘70 or ‘80 chances are that you grew up watching Jimmy Savile on the BBC’s Jim’ll Fix It show. Jim would “fix it” for several lucky children’s wishes to come true each week, this usually involved such treats as watching a troupe of Cub Scouts eating their entire packed lunch on a roller coater (and then being sick!) or similar, and finally the lucky participants would be presented with a “Jim fixed it for me” medal, the famous Jim’ll Fix It Badge! Cutting the Electric Bills

At certain times of year your electric bill can soar out of control. It might be in winter as you need to keep warm or in summer as you’re trying to cool off, but many people want to pay less for their electricity. Finding ways to cut this isn’t always easy.

One of the most obvious things to do is to get a programmable thermostat. This allows you to control which temperature will activate your heater or air conditioner at different parts of the day. You want one that can be set for morning, daytime, evening and nighttime temperatures. These will allow you to program it to go with the usual flow of your day.

If you can get used to setting the temperature a little lower in winter and higher in summer you’ll also do better. This is relatively simple in winter, as you can just pile on an extra sweater when you’re awake, and an extra blanket at night. It’s a bit more challenging during the summertime, but you can get used to warmer temperatures if you don’t spoil yourself with the air conditioner.

Take advantage of your ceiling fans. These do work winter and summer for circulating air. Contrary to popular belief, fans don’t so much cool air as they do move it, which makes it feel cooler. If you put the ceiling fan into the reverse setting in the winter it will circulate the warm air which rises toward the ceiling.

Many dishwashers allow you to just drip dry the dishes instead of using heat on them.

Unplug electronics when they aren’t in use, unless the clock needs to remain set. Most people can get away with unplugging the coffee pot as well as other electronics. Similarly, things that charge up such as electric toothbrushes can get by for several days or even weeks (depending on usage) before needing to be plugged back in. The charger keeps using electricity even when it’s not actively charging. I plug mine in once a week for about a day and it does just fine.

As a matter of fact, if it’s plugged in you can assume it’s using electricity, even if only a tiny amount. Decide what feels reasonable to keep unplugged when not in use.

Switch your light bulbs to compact fluorescent bulbs. This can be a small savings, but not only do they use less electricity, they last longer than incandescent bulbs, enough so be to worth the extra cost in most cases. In some places the electric company may even provide free ones for you to try.

Do I need to state the obvious? Turn the extra lights off! Also turn off the computer and monitor when you don’t need them on.

Keeping your refrigerator in good shape helps too. If you clean off the coils (either behind or beneath it), the refrigerator can operate more efficiently. Check the temperature settings. If you’re keeping things colder than necessary you are using extra electricity.

Good insulation also helps. This includes the insulation of your window coverings. Heavy curtains do best for many people, as they help keep the heat in during the winter and out in summer. However, in some places you may be able to warm things up a little bit naturally by letting the sunlight in, even if things are slightly (not extremely) cool outside. Natural sunlight also means you don’t have to turn the lights on.

With these tactics you can save some good money around the house. All it requires is a little effort and occasionally a little extra money spent to save in the long run.

Creating The Best Room Conditions When Dealing With Insomnia

When dealing with insomnia, after establishing a consistent bedtime routine, it is important to create a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere in your bedroom. The more cozy and harmonic your bedroom is the more relaxed you will feel.

Your goal is to promote a calming and restive atmosphere. This can be achieved by creating a bedroom environment that is not only appealing to you but also functions without interruptions or annoying irritations.

Ensure that the room temperature is set according your preference.

Ideally your room should be on the cooler side; however you should experiment with your own comfort level.

You don’t want to wake during the night either too hot or too cold and then find yourself wide awake once again. Sleep experts say that the ideal room temperature is 65 to 70 degrees F.

If at all possible try to sleep with the window open, however slightly. This will allow for proper room ventilation. Adequate air current is necessary for you to breathe in circulating air. This will aid your body in breathing deeply and correctly.

You may be sensitive to noises around you and outside of the bedroom. If this is the case and you find that noise is disturbing or interrupting your sleep you may want to consider purchasing ear plugs.

Ear plugs may take a little getting used to, however there are plugs on the market that are specifically designed to be comfortable and unobtrusive to your sleep. Take time to try what works best for you.

If you find ear plugs to be too uncomfortable you may want to use a “white noise” machine, such as a fan. “White noise” from the fan is used to over-ride or mask other sounds that may be disturbing to your sleep, such as traffic and voices.

Ideally your bedroom should be as dark as possible so that you experience the daytime/nighttime cycle. Light may disrupt your normal circadian rhythm and signal your body that it is time to wake up.

If you find it difficult to fall asleep in a room that is infused with too much light, try purchasing an eye mask. There are eye masks on the market that will be comfortable to wear as well as effectively block out any interfering light.

If you find an eye mask to be too uncomfortable try hanging thick curtains or install blinds.

If you find yourself listening to the sound of a ticking clock you may want to remove the clock from your bedroom and replace it with a digital clock.

If you find yourself constantly looking at the time to see how many hours you have left to sleep you may want to turn the digital clock to the wall.

Knowing that time is passing will only increase your anxiety and stress about not sleeping.

Make sure that your room has no stimulation to lure you from sleep. This includes the television, computer, stereo equipment. You want to ensure that your bedroom is only used for sleeping and sex.

If you have a CD player in the bedroom make sure that you only use if for playing relaxing music or sleep inducing CDs.

If you find that your room is too dry you may want to purchase a humidifier, especially in the winter months.

Wear comfortable, loose clothing. The more constrained or uncomfortable you are the more likely you are to wake up during the night.

Do You Have What It Takes To Telecommute?

If you have wanted to be hired to work from home, the options for you are endless. Today nearly 23% of the workforce works from home at least part time. However, there are characteristics and work habits that you must have if you are going to be successful. Before you quit your regular job to take a work-at-home job, make sure you have what it takes to telecommute:

1) Do you have a skill or talent? Companies that use telecommuters are not looking home workers per se. Employers are more concerned with finding someone who has the skills and experience to do the job that needs to be done. So, how fast can you type? Are you accurate? Can you write? Do you have phone skills? Are you experienced using bookkeeping software? In essence, what skills do you have to give to a company?

2) Do you have the resources? While some companies will provide you with equipment and services, many won’t. Do you have a computer with high-speed Internet access? Do you have landline phone service with flat-rate long distance? Do you have basic word processing and spreadsheet programs? Do you have the equipment, services and resources to do the job you want to?

3) Are you reliable? Are you able to deliver the work at the quality expected in the time frame needed? This means if your child is sick, you can’t just slack off and work whenever. Instead you need to stay up late or get up early to meet the deadline. Work-at-home employees need to operate with the same professionalism as any other employees.

4) Are you self-motivated and able to work independently? There are hundreds of distractions when working at home. The laundry, Oprah, kids, neighbors, the couch for a nice nap, etc. There is no boss standing behind you to make sure you are getting the work done. Its up to you schedule time to work and to get it done in a timely manner.

5) Would you hire you? Before you answer that question, really think about it. If you were the owner of a business that needed to hire help, would you hire someone who had your work ethic or skills? If you are someone who chats a lot by the water cooler or does just enough to get by, you probably wouldn’t want to hire someone like you. If that is the case, you need to change your ways. Working at home gives you a great deal of flexibility and freedom, but its still a job in which someone is paying you to provide quality work to your best ability.

Telecommuting has been the perfect solution to balancing work and family for me; however, it does have its challenges. Not everyone is suited to dealing with the lack of structure and routine that comes with working at home. Before you take the leap into telecommuting, make sure you have what it takes to succeed.

Seeing The Invisible With Infrared Cameras

Every day, cameras capture some of the most breathtaking sights on earth. The ripple of water as it cascades down cliffs, a fire engine-red rose in full bloom, a leaf floating on a puddle – these images are preserved in memory and in colored prints, thanks to cameras. The same cannot be said of infrared cameras, however.

Infrared cameras do not capture images the way we see them in real life. In fact, the pictures that infrared cameras produce may even appear odd, disfigured, or even ugly. Some even think the random splashes of bright color indicate that the camera is broken. Once you understand how infrared cameras are used, however, these images begin to make sense, and even become beautiful in an indefinable way.

Somewhere Outside the Rainbow
Infrared light includes a range of radiation that we cannot see. Red is the brightest color on rainbows, and infrared radiation is just a little bit beyond it. On the other end, infrared radiation is positioned only a little bit below microwave radiation. For infrared light to be captured, nothing should block the object that is “viewing” the radiation. Infrared transmissions are used in audio and video remote controls, various detectors, and wireless connections between tools for computers.

Hot Pictures
The average Joe would find it hard to explain how infrared cameras are used. But really, the principle is simple. Its even akin to the principle behind the workings of a regular camera.

This is how infrared cameras are used. An infrared camera captures an object’s black-body radiation. A body emits this radiation due to temperature. The warmest infrared colors are usually white. Middle temperatures are colored yellow and red, and the coolest temperatures are colored blue. Infrared cameras work in pitch black because the amount of light surrounding objects is irrelevant. This, as well as other features, makes them ideal for several functions.

Hot Bodies
You may still be a little confused over how infrared cameras are used, but there’s no doubt you’ve seen one of its most practical applications. Infrared cameras are used to save lives. People and other mammals usually give off more heat than their environment. This tendency becomes even more pronounced at night. Infrared cameras can be used to look for people and animals lost or trapped in places such as thick forests, areas beneath avalanches and collapsed structures, and huge bodies of water.

Smoke Gets in Your Eyes
Infrared cameras may also be useful in search and rescue operations. To illustrate how infrared cameras are used in this case, imagine a typical raging inferno. As flames lick up houses one at a time, firefighters often have to walk through areas where visibility is nearly zero. This is where specially designed infrared cameras come handy. Built to endure extreme temperatures, these cameras help firefighters spot fire victims, as well as areas where fire still rages. The camera’s display is attached to the brim of a firefighter’s helmet, for easy access to information.

Fire, Ice, and Bodies
On other occasions, infrared cameras are used to search people, rather than to search for them. In the medical field, high-speed infrared pictures allow physicians to examine patients for extreme cooling or heating of the body. These changes indicate medical problems, among them cancerous tissues, abnormal circulation, and inflammation.

Don’t Drink Water If It Gets Cooler
Infrared cameras may also be used to study the causes of medical problems. To better understand how infrared cameras are used in this context, let’s focus on drinking water. The Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA, notes that polluted drinking water and surface water is one of the United States’ gravest environmental problems. Infrared cameras are often used to monitor stormwater drainage systems that flow into rivers, streams, creeks, and lakes. The cameras contrast the flow of non-water liquids, which is generally warmer than the flow of water, with water. The cameras quickly scan the region, including regions that would be difficult to access without infrared cameras. Then, they indicate the problematic areas on a digital map.

There is no doubt technology continues to improve our lives, and the infrared camera is no exception. It shows us what is otherwise invisible and gives hope when there is none.
